Gorna Bela Rechka is part of Varshets municipality and lies 7 km from the town Varshets and 30 km from the regional capital Montana in Northwestern Bulgaria. The village has about 60 inhabitants. The distance to Sofia is about 80 km. The village is located at about 500 m altitude on the Baltic system in the youngest and second largest national park in Bulgaria – Vrachanski Balkan.

Него го бият 1923а година след въстанието – 1924а, 1925а година е било, когато минаваха и са ги събирали, и тогава много хора са убили, тези ги бяха били, 5-6 човека, от село, и от Долна Бела Речка..И са убили тогава некои. Чичо ми е бил женен. Тука имаше една Генова, среща стринка ми и й казва, че са го убили. Тя се притеснява и се разболява. И умира. Оставя момиченце. И го дават ранениче у Долна Бела Речка. Тия хора не са имали деца…Баба ми е родила 10 деца, две са починали…Ама за това момиченце, (дето го дадоха), тя много го е жалила.
Викам, да са ме дали некъде, било е сигурно по-добре. Аз исках да отида при леля ми, при тази, къде е дадена раненица. Тя (се жени) в Долно Церовене. Дадена е в много богати. След това се жени пак за богат. (Мъжът й) бил учител, а свекър й бил поп. Това са били богати хора. Имотни. 600 декара имот са имали. След 1944а година нали вуйчо ми на никой нищо не е направил, богат, учител, и лежал в затвора 6 месеца, го съдиха, та лежа 6 месеци. Тия 6 месеци тя беше сама в Долно Церовене. Синовете и едната дъщеря беха в Толбухин, то сега го върнаха на Добрич. На по-малкия братовчед не му дадоха да завърши, той искаше право. Той пък много е говорил след 9-ти и много са го третирали…
В Бела Речка само един такъв случай знам… Той също беше учител. Атанас Гьонов от Гьонови. Той дали бе говорил нещо, не мога да си спомня, и той лежа. Те такива, пращат ги някъде за 6 месеца, и след това ги освобождават. Само за него знам.

„Това съм аз и Благо, а това е баба Елка. Тя почина много отдавна. Живееше на Тошко зад къщата, старата. Ние тука сме ходили да копаме. И се прибираме. Това е като се пенсионирахме. Благо се пенсионира 90-а година и си дойдехме веднага тука. И ходехме на лозето. Копахме, правихме си винце, всичко.“

(Да се върнеш на село след пенсиониране – е типично за Северозападна България, вероятно и за други места в страната. След 1989а икономическата криза изпраща още повече хора на село. В Горна Бела Речка по-голямата част от семействата са работили в София, Враца и други градове и след пенсиониране са избрали живота тук.)

В края на 40-те и началото на 50-те години на XX век Георги Маджаров е един от най-уважаваните и любими учители в двете съседни селски училища – в Горна и Долна Бела Речка, община Вършец. Построени през 30-те години на миналия век с доброволния труд на местните жители, двете училища съществуват до началото на 60-те години.
Колективизацията на земята, завършила в този край през 1957-а година, и започналата индустриализация в градовете стават причина много семейства и млади хора да напуснат двете села. Децата намаляват драстично, селата са обявени за “селища със затихващи функции” (на тогавашен социалистически език – тоест – умиращи).
В началото на 1955 година учителят Маджаров е уволнен от работа. Причините са политически. На 24 май 1955 година той слага край на живота си.
Денят бил празник, 24 май, и по нищо не обещавал да се превърне в трагично събитие за семейството. Георги Маджаров заедно със съпругата си Ана отишли сутринта в близката до тях борова гора за дърва. Върнали се на обяд, хапнали и легнали за следобедна дрямка. Тогава Георги чул ученическите фанфари за празника, станал и излязъл да види кое-що. Тъй като не се прибрал до вечерта, жена му отишла при съседите и казала, че го няма. Тръгнали да го търсят в различни посоки. Намерели го обесен, в близката борова гора, на едно черешово дърво. Съседът, който го намерил, полудял.
В семейството историята никога не е била разказвана. Маджаров има двама сина, Димитър и Борис, които тогава, по време на случката, са вече големи, над 25 годишни. Година по-късно единият се оженва, раждат му се двама сина, първият е кръстен на дядо си Георги. До втория внук Пламен ще достигне само детайл от семейната травма – черешовото дърво.
Какви са били политическите причини, поради които такъв добър учител е уволнен през 1955 година? Можем само да гадаем. В колективната памет не е останало нищо, само догадки. Някои от хората допускат, че Маджаров имал прогресивни идеи, симпатизирал на Никола Петков и не бил привърженик на колективизацията на земята. Никола Михайлов, 92 годишен, от Горна Бела Речка, си спомня, че със сина му Борис били приятели, учили заедно, но когато станала случката, той не питал нищо, защото му било неудобно.
Защо Маджаров е избрал точно датата 24 май? Дали това не е бил неговият последен протест срещу системата? Какво се е случило вътре в него, чувайки празничните фанфари за 24 май, неговия празник? Можем само да гадаем.

Ето ги тука – майка ми, баща ми, сигурно след това наскоро е починала. Умира от минингит. След тази снимка като е направена…И това сме ние. Аз съм на 8 години най-много да съм била… то е като на лента ми е записано. Как се е разболела, как я караха до Вършец, па я върнаха, па след това я закараха у Враца, за една седмица почина. Тя е правила аборт, по техен начин са си правили, не на доктор, оттам получава кръвоизлив. А по това време брат ми го ухапа едно куче, дошло отнекъде, не е било от село, ухапа го за ръчичката, той да е бил на 5.6 години.
Това сме ние, брат ми, сестра ми и той. И то му се поду ръчичката и дигна температура. Ние бехме горе в последната къща, дето падна. И то като лежи на кревата и гледа отсреща и вика на баба ми и на майка ми, че вижда хора там, товарят дърва. А то няма никой. А той е вдигнал температура, сигурно е бленувал. Майка ми от притеснение и сигурно и този кръвоизлив, който беше получила, и се разболе тя тогава. Главата, главата…А тука дето беха тези двете къщи – една беше на чичо Петър, едната, най-старата, на дедо ми, остана една от стринките ми, къде е близнак на татко. Другите излезоха и си направиха къщи. И стринка ми, отидох да я викна, да отидеме с нея до Кецови долу. Да викнеме дядо ми и баба ми, че майка не е добре. И те дойдоха. И я караха до Вършец. И там лекарите беха казали, имаше един Пенев, Пенев бе гинеколог, а другият сигурно некаква друга специалност, но лекуваха всичко. И те казаха, веднага да се закара във Враца. Ама те я върнаха, не знам колко време престоя, и след това намериха начин и я закараха, ама там почина, в болницата във Враца. Тая болница във Враца от дете я знам. Всичко е много тежко. Аз какво да кажа, като всичко е тъжно? Тъжно е и после мащехата бе много лоша. След две-три години баща ми се ожени. Тя е от Дружево.

Взех най-хубавия ергенин в село, нямаше мома да го не харесва. И аз успях да го взема. Най-младата съм. Кога се оженихме, си имахме разправии, не ме искаха неговите, че не съм работна, че съм дете…17та година карах… Ама тогава съм била най-щастливата. После се роди Силвето. И сме живели живот с него, 60 годин как сме женени. Като момиче съм била слугиня, у София съм гледала дечурлига, че да съм пременена. Пременена бех до ента степен. Имах на една комшийка, жена на военен лекар, шиеше, и като дойдох тука, пременена, тука селски момичета…Аз със начервени нокти, на краката, пременена, убава…Он си ме хареса. Нищо, че не дадоха да се женим, ние си се оженихме..И отидохме у Вършец, и кмета ни стана свидетел, и бирника, така, ни пременени, ни облечени, така отидохме, подписахме и казахме на нашите.

Моите баба и дядо идват от два рода – Маленини и Македонците.
Дядо ми Костадин е от така наречения род Македонци. Неговият баща Георги е бил строител и идва в Северна България от Югозападния край, Велинградско, от там носи името. Харесва баба Тодора и се женят. Раждат се дядо ми Костадин и сестра му-Славка. След време Георги пада от строеж и умира. Баба Тодора се жени повторно и се раждат още двама братя: Иван и Илия.
Баба ми Васа е от рода Маленини. Нейният баща, дядо Георги, е участвал в Първата световна война. Него го помня, имаше рана на крака си. Баба ми Васа са 7 деца: Пена, Марикя, Васа, Илия, Петър, Иван, Борис.
Трима от братята на баба ми бяха много умни хора и тя много се гордееше с тях. Иван Маленин беше директор на Лозаро-винарския институт в Плевен. Борис Маленин работеше в МВР в София, а Петър Маленин беше летец-изпитател.
Мама Васа (виках й мама) е родeна на 01 януари 1907 г. , почина на 10 май 2001 година. Татко (дядо ми) Костадин е роден на 15 ноември 1905 г. и почина през май 1985 г.

My uncle lost his wife. He was beaten after the [September] Uprising of 1923. In 1924 or 1925, they went around and rounded up a lot people, killing many of them. Five or six people from Gorna Bela Recka and Dolna Bela Rechka were beaten, some of them killed. [By that time] my uncle was married. There was a woman here, Ghenova [her name was], she saw my aunt [in the street] and told her my uncle had been killed. My aunt got worried and became sick. And she died. She left behind a little girl, which was given for adoption in Dolna Bela Rechka. These people didn’t have children of their own… My grandmother had ten children, two had died… But she was very sorry for the granddaughter [that was given for adoption]…
I say, if they had given me somewhere for adoption [too], it would have been better. I wanted to go and live with my aunt, the one who had been adopted. She [married] in Dolno Tseroveneh. She had been adopted by very rich people. And she married a rich guy. He was a teacher and her father-in-law was a priest. They had 600 decares of land. After [the communist coup of] 1944, her husband was in prison for six months. He hadn’t done anybody any harm, he was just well-off, a teacher, but they sentenced him. So my aunt was alone in Dolno Tseroveneh for those six months. Their two sons and only daughter lived in Tolbukhin, they’ve now restored its old name, Dobrich. My younger cousin wanted to study law, but he was not allowed to. He talked a lot against the regime after the coup and they punished him…
In Bela Rechka, I know of only one such case… He was a teacher, too. Atanas Gyonov of the Gyonov family. Whether he spoke against the regime, I can’t remember, but he was jailed, too. They jailed people for six months like this, and then they let them out. That’s the only case [in Bela Rechka] I know of.

I took the handsomest guy in the village, there wasn’t a girl that didn’t fancy him. And I managed to take him. I was the youngest. When we got married, there were arguments, my in-laws didn’t want me, because I couldn’t work [like everyone else], I was still a child… I was barely 17… But those were my happiest times. Then Silveto, my daughter, was born. And we’ve lived on together for 60 years. As a girl, I had worked as a maid and babysitter in Sofia, so that I could [afford] buying nice clothes. I got dressed up to the nth degree. I had a neighbor, a military doctor’s wife, who was a seamstress [who made clothes for me]. And when I came back [to Bela Rechka], I was all dressed up, they were all village girls here… I had red varnished nails, on my toes [too], all elegant and beautiful… And he took a liking to me. His parents wouldn’t let us get married, but we married nonetheless. We went to Varshets, and the mayor and the tax collector became our witnesses. We had no wedding clothes, but we signed like that, and told our parents afterwards.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Georgi Madjarov was one of the most respected and beloved teachers in the two neighbouring village schools in Gorna Bela Rechka and Dolna Bela Rechka. Built in the 1930s with residents’ voluntary labour, both schools existed until the early 1960s.
The collectivisation of land, which in Northwestern Bulgaria was completed in 1957, and the burgeoning industrialisation of Bulgarian cities drove many families and young people away from the region. The number of children decreased dramatically, and the two villages were declared “settlements with declining functions”, which in the socialist nomenclature of the times meant they were dying out naturally.
At the beginning of 1955, the teacher Madjarov was dismissed from his job, for political reasons. On 24 May 1955, he ended his life.
24 May 1955 was a holiday [a traditional Bulgarian celebration of the Cyrillic Alphabet, of education and culture], and no one in the family anticipated the day would end tragically. In the morning, Georgi Madzharov and his wife Anna went to a nearby pine woods to gather firewood. At noon they returned, had lunch and went for an afternoon nap. Then Georgi heard the school fanfare band, which was playing on the occasion of the holiday, got up and went out. He had not come home by evening, and his wife went over to the neighbors to tell them he was missing. Together they went looking for him in different directions. He was found hanging from a cherry tree in a nearby woods. The neighbour who found him went mad.
The story was never passed on to the next generations. Madjarov had two sons, Dimitar and Boris, who at the time of the incident were fully grown up, both over 25 years old. A year later, one of them got married and had two sons, of which the first was named after his grandfather Georgi. The only detail of the family trauma that would reach Georgi Madjarov’s other grandson, Plamen, was the cherry tree.
What were the reasons for the firing of such a good teacher in 1955? We can only guess. There is nothing left in the collective memory, only speculations. Some Bela Rechens believe Madjarov had progressive ideas, sympathised with the opposition leader of the peasant movement Nikola Petkov, and did not support the collectivization of land. Nikola Mikhailov, 92 (recently deceased), from Gorna Bela Rechka, who was a friend and classmate of Madjarov’s son Boris, remembered that when the incident happened, he didn’t dare ask his friend anything because he was embarrassed.
Why did Madjarov choose the date of 24 May? Was this his last protest against the system? What occurred inside him, when he heard the holiday fanfare? We can only guess.

Here they are – my mother, my father, my mother must have died soon after. She died of meningitis. After this picture was taken… And this is us. I’m 8 years old at the most… It’s like it’s recorded in my mind on film. How she got sick, how they drove her to Varshets, how she was brought back and later taken to Vratsa. She died within a week. She’d had an abortion. They did it their own way, not seeing a doctor, that’s how she got the hemorrhage.
Around that time, my brother was bitten by a dog. [I remember] it came from somewhere else, it wasn’t from the village. It bit his hand, he was 5 or 6 years old. That’s us, my brother, my sister and me. My brother’s hand swelled up and he ran a fever. We used to live in the last house up the hill, the one that [later] fell. I remember my brother lying in bed, looking out the window, telling my grandmother and mother he was seeing people loading up firewood. But there was nobody. He was running a fever, and he must have been hallucinating. My mother worried and that hemorrhage…, and she got sick. Her head, her head… And these two houses here… one was Uncle Petar’s, and the other one, it was the oldest [in the area], it was my grandfather’s, it later went to one of my aunts, who was Dad’s twin. His other siblings went out and built their own houses. I called up my aunt and together we went to the Ketsovs down the hill to tell my grandparents my mother wasn’t well. They came up and drove her to Varshets. The doctors – one was Penev, the gynecologist, the other one must have had another specialty, but they treated everything – they said Mum should be taken to Vratsa immediately. But they brought her back [here nonetheless], I don’t know how long she stayed before they found a way of taking her to Vratsa, where she died in the hospital. I surely know that hospital well since I was a child. It’s all heavy stuff. What else could I say when it’s all so sad? It was so sad and then the stepmother was evil. After two or three years, my father remarried. My stepmother was from Druzhevo.

This is our only photo together. The year is 1956. These are my mother, Gergefka Gospodinova, and my father, Angel Gospodinov. The children are my stepsister Nikolina Krumova Alexova and her cousin Georgi. Then next to her is my sister Snezhanka Nedkova, born in 1953. And me.
My sister [Snezhanka] was later given for adoption. We found each other after more than 30 years. What a thing… I scanned this photo and gave it to her when we met.

“This is me and Blago, and this is Grandma Elka. She died a long time ago. She lived behind Toshko’s house, his old one. We are on our way back from hoeing here. We are going home. This is after we retired. Blago retired in 1990 and we came right back [to Gorna Bela Rechka]. We took care of the vineyard. We hoed it, we made our own wine and everything.”

(Going back to one’s village after retirement is typical for Northwestern Bulgaria, and probably for other regions of the country. The economic crisis of 1989 sent even more people back to the countryside. Most of the families now living in Gorna Bela Rechka used to live and work in Sofia, Vratsa and other Bulgarian cities before returning to the village after retirement.)

My grandparents came from two families – the Malenini and the “Macedonians”.
My grandfather Kostadin was from the so-called Macedonian family. His father Georgi was a builder and came to Northern Bulgaria from the Southwest, the Velingrad region, hence the nickname. He took an interest in grandmother Todora and they got married. My grandfather Kostadin and his sister Slavka were born from that marriage. After a while, Georgi fell from a building and died. Grandmother Todora remarried and another two brothers were born, Ivan and Iliya.
My grandmother Vassa was from the Malenini family. Her father, [great-]grandfather Georgi, had fought in the First World War. I do remember him, he had a wound on his leg. My grandmother Vassa had seven children: Pena, Marikya, Vassa, Iliya, Petar, Ivan, and Boris.
Three of my grandmother’s brothers were very intelligent men and she was very proud of them. Ivan Malenin was the director of the Vine and Wine Institute in Pleven. Boris Malenin worked at the Ministry of the Interior in Sofia, and Peter Malenin was a test pilot.
Mama Vassa (I called her Mama) was born on 1 January 1907 and died on 10 May 2001. Papa (my grandfather) Kostadin was born on 15 November 1905 and died in May 1985.
